Verify the size of the trans input shaft. The input shaft used with the 356 engine has an outside diameter of approx 1 3/8" and the end that sticks in the pilot bearing is a few thousandths under 1". The smaller unit used with the other engines has a shaft diameter of about 1 1/8" with the pilot bearing end somewhere around 3/4 to 7/8". If you have the 356 unit then it would probably be a better use of time and money if you tried to find the smaller unit and sold or traded the larger one.
Sound as if you have already ID'd it as an R11 OD. Just to reiterate, Lockout lever and Solenoid are both on the drivers side for the R11 and on the passenger side for the R9. If it is from a 48 the case will probably have two vertical sets of mounting holes a couple of inches apart on each side. If yours has the double set it will be a simpler job to bolt in with the earlier crossmembers.
Here is a pre-1951 R11 where the two pair of mounting holes are visible on the side which Howard described and it has the smaller pilot on the input shaft.
