Personally I prefer the c-clamp type that are commonly used on overhead valve engines. They seem to work well and are easier to get out of the way of the actual work. Both types are inexpensive new so I hope the one on Marketplace is free or cheap!

Does the c-clamp style work if I'm working on my engine in the car?

Yes, I've done it many times and nearly always in the car.

Good to know, I thought there might to too many things in the way to get to all the valves with the c-clamp style.

I don't know whether Packard Don has any special tricks, but I don't think the C-Clamp style works in the car unless you take the manifolds off. I have one of both kinds, I used the C-Clamp style when I had the engine out of the car with the manifolds off, and I haven't been able to figure out how to use the C-Clamp style without taking the manifolds off. This style works fine.

Never any problems and no special tricks but it was decades ago so I don't recall if the manifolds were off or not.

No need to pull my manifolds at this point, so I'll go with the side valve spring compressor. Mind you every week I fall farther down the rabbit hole, so manifolds could be coming off yet! LOL

My strong personal preference is for the scissor-type valve spring compressor as typified by the K-D unit pictured below. I've used this one for dozens of L-head engine valve jobs, never a moment of dissatisfaction.
K-D also made a tool to insert the keepers, again pictured below. In this case I don't feel the tool is useful, I've found it much easier to put the keepers on by hand with just a dab of grease on the backside to hold them in place while the spring and retainer is lower.
