When I did this job last spring, I used a heat gun to get the old gasket out, followed by a lift steel wool. I did end up painting some bare metal as well, then 3M weatherstrip adhesive. I mentioned it on my 120 blog linked below.

Thanks for the tip on the heat gun. I rarely use it and it's nice to get some use out of it. It worked real well.
