The final solution!!
I got it all woring properly and now fully functional - the first time I've had a positive current to the battery since I bought the car. The problem was that the guy who rebuilt the dynamo didn't suffiently insulate the two long bolts that hold the 2 halves of the dynamo together. Originally, they would have been in a paper sleeve. When I first looked at it, I put tape round them. The "specialist" took the tape off and the coil connecting wires were touching them. I put the tape back on again!!! At least I dont have to take it back again but we will have "words" tomorrow. Packard V8; I couldnt send the unit off because it only has one bearing - its very difficult to bench test without a special rig which nobody seems to have. I can only be safely tested on the car.

Glad to hear u have it fixed. One suggestion is to use shrink tube on the bolts instead of electrical tape. However, i would not take it apart just to redo it with shrink tube either.

I tried heat shrink first - it looked great but wouldn't go through the hole in the casting
