Power to the People (the Final Chapter?)

I think the long-running saga of my regulator problem is finally over.

I got in touch with this chap who really does know his stuff.

http://www.davelindsley.co.uk/

He talked me through a number of tests (on the car owing to the single bearing on the dynamo) then sent me an electronic regulator for about ?100

I painted it out black and managed to fit it underneath the dynamo so it is not visible at all. I'll re-fit the (sort of) original regulator to the top of the dynamo and paint the cap green so as to keep the period look.

It all seems to work fine so good news at last.

ok. So i am assuming u used the JG e-Regulator advertised on the website posted above.

Were there any INTERNAL modifications made to the generator to accomodate the NEW regulator???

Yes, I used the JG electronic regulator

I had to convert the dynamo to a 2 brush setup but this is non-invasive and can be put back to 3 brush literally within 2 minutes

Are those available over here? That UK website says they don't ship to Canada or US.

It seems odd that they say they dont trade in the US or Canada but then say they've sold 30,000 regulators worldwide

http://www.davelindsley.co.uk/jg-electronic-regulators.html

There's no part number - the idea is to go through the set up with them and then you receive the right one for the job.

STOP PRESS on this though.......

Mine has stopped working already!!!! - I suspect the dynamo and I've just had a row on the phone with the guy who refurbished it. I have to strip it down this weekend to see what he has and hasnt done..... report to follow

THe first thing i would do is to determine EXACTLY what has stopped wortking.
1. Has the generator stoppped working (regulator eleminated from system test) U already been thru that test more than once ????

2. Or has the regulator stoppped working????

It's got to be one or the other. Go from there.

IF the generator out put test (without regulator connected) shows NO output from the the generator then Check the windings of the field coils and armature to make sure they are not shorted or burned/broken in two.

Eleminating that 3rd brush has me a little worried. I can only guess at this point:

Process for eleminating the 3rd brush required that u GROUNDED the wire that originaly went to 3rd brush to the generator frame ?????

That most likely caused the generator to run WIDE OPEN OUTPUT depending on the e-reg to regulate output to the battery. Likely that the windings of the generator would not take PROLONGED operation at wide open output.
