Yes. The Utica Plant engine number number. I understand. According to STB 56T-20 dated 5-3-56 Page 1 about 1/2 way down the page:

"Incidently the Utica Plant Engine Number is now stamped on the casting in the same general location as the engine serial number and not on the right rear exhaust port flange..."

The STB references April 10th directly above it but not specifically for the Utica engine number.

So, once again, if the last 26 Caribs had early UTICA engine numbers then we would expect to find the UTICA engine number on the rear of the block.

BTW. The wording used in the STB is incorrect. The Utica engine number on early V8's was on the BLOCK just under the exhaust port flange of the HEAD.

Most of these cars have 2 sheets a "car production order" and an "in transit receipt in lieu of bill of lading" the dates are stamped on the car production order sheet. In 1982 I replaced the block in my 5699-1089 and the serial number was stamped on the right (passenger side) front of the block

Is that to say "5699-1089" was stamped on the right front of the block near the oil fill tube??? AND the Utica engine number also stamped there just above the "5699-1089"??

No the 5699-1089 was stamped on the front of the block by the water manifold on the passenger side below the generator it was blank by the oil fill tube

Hmmmmmmm. Seems like that location for engine serial number (not Utica engine number) has surfaced once before several years ago and i forgot about it.

On my 5699-1254, the Utica#, C1137, is in the usual place on the passenger side, rear, just below the head on a protruding tab of the block. The vehicle# is stamped in the usual place by the oil filler tube.

The Utica transmission number is on the rear of the case, left side, below the tailshaft. Mine is C1509. It being the 509th Carib Twin Ultramatic is consistent with just about 500 Caribbeans (hardtop + convertible) being built to that point, more or less. Its the Utica engine # that's not consistent; except for convertiblre #1009, they all have higher Utica engine numbers than mine, and are earier production.

This has been pretty interesting, but enough for me for a while on this topic. Been fun.

Agreed, here's a pix of the Utica # on my spare (Patrician) block, never have been able to explain the red paint. Also a pic of the Utica transmission #, I owe someone photo credit for that one but can't remember who.

Owen. That gasket on the trans oil pan looks unusually thick. NOT like cork either.

Friend Chris noted that most 55-56 Caribbeans have the engine serial number stamped on the right (passenger) side of the block below the water manifold. I always look if the hood is open and the majority of the ones I have seen are stamped there. I believe this was because the Caribbeans were assembled offline in a separate area and they supplied unnumbered blocks to that group. Whoever stamped the numbers either liked that location or thought that was the proper place for the number.
