Reading this was the first time I had heard of the term "Maytag Messerschmitt" being applied to the Mustang. The book attributed it to the wide use of Maytag supplied aluminum castings in the Packard-built Merlins. Why not on other aircraft equipped with Packard Merlins? Maybe it was a carry-over from something else. Don't know...
