Hi

While indeed GM did introduce their all-steel "Turret Top" for 1935, much of the body was still wood structure. These interior photos are of a rough '36 Cadillac Series 60 sedan, which shared its Fisher body with other GM makes shows how much wood was still in volume production models.

GM switched over to all-steel body construction for all but the lowest volume bodies in 1937. They continued to used wood for interior tack strips, non-structural framing and body mounting sills up to the WWII.

Interesting to see all the wood structure. I had a 39 Cadillac 60 Special and it had heavy duty wooden planks on each side of the frame on which the body was fastened. The body was all steel. My 37 Six Convertible Coupe has all steel doors. They were made by Budd. Car builders of that time were still using wood in some of the body structure while moving to all steel bodies.

Dave (O_D), Steve (58L8134) & John (JW), thanks for the valuable information about a development, that was obviously a gradual transition.

Quote:
Gusha, the 1939 Twelve and the 1938 Super 8 were the last Packards with wood frame and steel skin construction, ... , another consideration would be economic; the 2/4 passenger coupe body was used by both the Super Eight and Twelve in 1938, and just the Twelve in 1939 and in total only 66 are believed to have been built. One could never justify the cost of stamping dies for a production run of only 66 cars.

Dave, you've said it before: "...it's a dull day that we don't learn something new!" Thanks again.
Budd, in 1920s/1930s world-renowned as the torchbearer of all-steel bodies delivered the tools for the ZIS-101 in mid-1930s. The 101 was a car with more wood in it than Noah's ark.
