good afternoon thanks JOE i have read your history on 356 rebuilt i think everything will be usefull for me. all my stuff is in machine shop waiting for valve guides and pistons pin bushings etc etc i,ve seen you put the engine back in frame with the head bolted on. from where did you lift it when i removed mine i used angled anchors on head studs i am curious what is the trick Maurice

John owns a crane company. He used 6' and 8' long nylon chokers around the engine and a winch/hoist on a barn beam. Chain would damage the oil pan, valve covers.

But we ended up taking the head off after it was on the frame, mainly because the shop should not have sent the assembled engine back with loose studs that leaked after we added water and ran the engine. They paid for a new head gasket and break-in oil.

Yesterday he torqued the head to 20, then at 40, then at 63 lbs.

Everything on the engine is done now and it runs like a top. We burned in the cam by running the engine at 1200 - 1800 rpm (we used a battery operated laser tachometer) for a half-hour.

John will torque the head again today.

good afternoon everybody by the time i am waiting for my parts i started cleaning small parts and what a surprise in the strainer almost blocked. pump body and gears like new. Packard engineers thanks for making the strainer screen with that mini holes Maurice

Not an uncommon finding! It's one reason that many of us suggest to new purchasers that one of the first things to do is to drop the oil pan and clean the pan and the pump intake.

you are so right Owen it,s a must i will clean all the oil gallery and passages when i gonna have the block back in my garage

another problem i have o?l leak Under the pump for Windows so i removed it and see it is leaking from small hole Under the electric motor housing i took it apart and found the seal is leaking because the shaft is badly pitted where the seal is positionned. has somebody tried to put speedy sleeve on the shaft. what guys do you think about that thanks Maurice

please advice from experts why this small hole on pump cover. it goes behind the seal i thought it was drain hole for the excess of o?l between the seal and the cover but it is impossible because the hole is on the side of pressure of the pump.and the hole is higher than the shaft. atthis time the pump put pressure on the seal at around 150 psi i got it wrong or what thanks Maurice
