Dave, thanks for the info. I keep planning on putting the car into hibernation, but the weather isn't (is?) cooperating! Last year at this time I had a foot of snow on the ground, this year it is 50F and sunny today. I had to go to work for a few hours, so I drove the Packard!

I will be sending out my exhaust manifold to get coated. I was planning on using Jet-Hot coatings. Does the automatic choke cover on the manifold also get coated the same color? Thanks!

I used Jet-Hot on my '34 exhaust manifold about 10 years ago, it's held up well enough, not perfect as some rust is beginning to show at the base of some of the old rust pits but overall I think you'll be pleased with it. Of course the correct finish for mine would have been blue-black porcelain but that doesn't hold up well for a car mostly used for touring. Not 100% positive but I believe the choke hotbox cover was naked steel or perhaps Parkerized or otherwise metalized to inhibit rust, but it was not painted.

Thanks! Learned something new - I had not heard of that process previously. When home parkerizing, would one use a zinc based spray paint, like something from Rustoleum, or just a silver hi-temp engine paint?

Braved the cold and went into the shop to pull the manifold tonight. Easy project, everything came right off. I did make a couple interesting discoveries - the most interesting being that the head is stamped HC. I'm assuming that that means I have the 7 to 1 compression ratio head. How rare is that? Also found that whoever rebuilt the engine in its past did not use the correct brass nuts on the manifold so I will have to fix that.

I was just planning on getting the manifold coated, but after close inspection of the carburetor size of the throttle shaft was very sloppy, so now I'm planning on sending it to Daytona as well. Always something new.

Just from what I've observed over the years, I don't believe the "HC" head is particularly uncommon.

Re Daytona, I've heard rather recently that they are no longer offering carburetor rebuilding services, kits and parts only. Not that there aren't other quality rebuilders and sources for rebuilt units on exchange, but I always considered Daytona to be the best in the game.

Daytona did the carburetor for my '37 120 in October. Excellent work and great turn around time.

Dave - When did you hear they were no longer doing rebuilds?

About 2 weeks ago, heard via a friend who has 10-20 carbs done by them per year so I assume he's in a position to know.

Dave, you are correct. I guess they got tired of the re-work required when someone connected an old dirty tank to a new carb, and it was hurting their bottom line.

Any reccomendations for who to have do the work? I want to ensure that the shafts are re-bushed. Slop in the main shaft is the primary reason I am going after a rebuild.

Ken, if you get Hemmings Motor News there are quite a few carburetor rebuilders listed. I can't give a personal recommendation as I have only been using Daytona for quite some years but I do hear good reports from others on The Carb Doctor and Larry Isro (or is it Isgro) in NY. Another think to consider is buying a rebuilt on an exchange basis from Kanter - I'm confident their units are done properly and they do have a warranty.
