So, we got it all buttoned up last night. There will be an alignment required as the rear end seems to have shifted...once everything was reinstalled, the torque tube wasn't aligned anymore...which is a bit strange.

As a heads up, we did add a breather to the fill-plug and the shifter plate is not completely sealed all the way around to allow for pressure venting.

Thanks again to everyone for their help.

An extra breather is OK as long as it is not in a location where a spinning gear can thrown oil up and out but just FYI, on most of the transmissions you should be able to seal the top plate all around using a gasket or RTV. Not sure about the big 30s Super and Twelve transmissions but on all the regular cars thru 54, case venting was done via a longitudinally drilled bolt with a protective crimped on dust cap being used at the right rear bolt location. I doubt the added plate or other changes to the case to accommodate the torque tube would have affected the normal venting.

Transmission gaskets should be available through Olson's Gaskets should you want to use something other than silicon sealer which would not have been my first choice.

To add to what Howard said, there was a special bolt for the right rear cover that was drilled through for venting and that should be all you need. Leaving holidays (gaps) in the cover seal is an invitation for leaks as oil splashes all over inside during operation.
