In my opinion, spacers are NOT OK. Here is a pic of the bushing - note teeth. They are there to grip the shaft. If you put a spacer between the bushing teeth and the shaft, then there is no grip and the bushing is free to turn on the shaft. There are NO pictures of tightening the upper OR lower bushings on a T-L car. The illustrations in the shop manual are from a Clipper that has totally different bushings and control arms because it does NOT have T-L.

Randy, thanks for confirming my comment on how these bushings are intended to function. And an important point by PackardV8, you need to "neutralize" the suspension so that the rubber is "neutral" or under no torsional tension when the car is at it's neutral riding height/ Frictionless or low-friction bushings will destroy the riding qualities.

thanks v8,

nuts are loose,, you can still move arm, I just got done putting back together,,

I did check on those ,, going to try to get them,, but that's only 2,,

they do contact arm, next to flange there a bump...guess added pressure.

my other question now is,,

upper knuckle ,,is the cam on the high end or, low end ,, or in the middle..

Randy,

If that inner sleeve is 1-1/2,,then its to short,, that looks like the ones I have.

Also, the bushings I took off did not have the points,, and I don't think the org I took off had them.

the bushings I had on there came from steve Williams,,Studebaker/Packard.

The sleeves on the proper bushings are 1 and 13/16. If the bushings you took off did not have points, then they were not original.

Note that the cross shaft is POSITIONAL! Need to read SM for details. If it is reversed it will change (possibly loose) camber adjustment range. So it needs to go back in exactly as it came out UNLESS u had experienced loss of camber adjustment before disassembly.

SEE SEVICE MANUAL!!

on to ,, the washers,,

were they put on at factory, then removed as an up grade????

With the points on the shaft shoulder,,would that not wear?? the shoulder?? then you would need new shaft.

I guess I nee to crawl under my dads 56 pat. its org. see if I can see if washers are there.

My dads exhaust system is org.. amazing, little rust on corners, muffler and resonators ..

Here are the ones I have used.

I have to agree with everyone about the importance of the rubber with the TL system.
