If you are lucky - sticky valve cured via gumout
Unlucky, wrist pin bushing loose in the rod. Given how dirty those motors are I'll go with sticky valve. Especially if the motor is run in the garage and not taken out on the road.

What's the oil pressure when this happens? One lifter or all of them clacking?
You may be a candidate for the Olds oil pump conversion. Craig

I have to get in it and dig deeper, I figured it may be the oil pump actually not accuartly working. I was going to use the Diesel to clean it out , but hadn't gotten to it yet.

It gets loud when it happens but the pressure stays pretty strong?

Since lifter noisse comes and goes then most likely it is a worn oil pump. Typical of the packard vv8 engine.

There is another possibility and that is the pickup is clogging up with sludge.
You should pull the oil pan before you do any flushing attempts. You can drop the pump at the same time. Packard reported valve noise at moderate speeds: 40-45 mph. If the knocking is number 8 rod bearing then don't drive it until you drop the pan. There are a number of theories on the cause. I have my own based on some physics, but even Packard didn't resolve it. You should check as well that your pump has the updated relief valve.
