Intake manifold gaskets

Hi, I suspect that the intake manifold gaskets on my 1955 Patrician need replaced, due to the fact that I can't get a good adjustment on the idle air.
I will spray carb cleaner around the gasket areas to confirm this.
My question is, which manifold gasket should I use? Steel or composite?
Thanks!

I suspect that, properly installed, either will perform satisfactorily. When I did my 56 intake I used OEM steel intake manifold gaskets, never a problem. Composite gaskets might be a bit more forgiving.

Have you run a manifold vacuum test first before condemning the gaskets? And of course checked all the other possible locations for a vacuum leak?

Are you using the original carb? Is it the 4gc ? Have you had it rebuilt and have you temporrarily removed and plugged all vacuum hoses?

Possibly, if the bottom end has rotted away - that would lead to a vacuum leak which should be easily noticeable if you test with a vacuum gauge. It's simply a piece of steel tubing swedged at both ends and very easy to make and install a new one, I did so on my 56. Of course you have to have the manifold off to do so.
