It may have been cracked before it ever came out or at least cracking and breaking of the twin Ultra shafts at that weak spot in the center of the lever apparently was a common problem. Believe the originals were some kind of cast or maybe some kind of hardening process made them brittle. IMO, the grain pattern at the break looks strange when you compare it to ordinary steel rod.

Ultramatic Dynamics makes new "improved" shafts but no idea what he uses. He might tell if you ask but more likely would rather sell a new one.

I'd think about making them from oil-hardening drill rod.

I like ross's fix,, he does use g8 bolt, but uses spacers no groove, which is a good point, that groove weakens the shaft,,its in the middle too boot......

dave I will get some drill rod too, and see how it is.

chrome moly another option, but they don't have it in 3/8s,

going with the g8 bolt, if, Packard would of used the shaft for low, brake, think they would be ok, its, 1/2 inch, the reverse is 3/8s, then you have that groove, not enough room in case to ream out to 1/2 inch/

spacers to center lever, see what I have around here ,,hot roll should be ok, might have 3/4 stainless, to get fancy, could put needle thrust washers on the sides,,,,
