Depth of the 341718 bell housing is 7-7/8 inches, outside measurement from the side that faces the engine block to the side that the transmission bolts up to.

Brian, Thank you very much for the dimension. As noted in a previous post, it is the same as mine.
This eliminates the part of the puzzle that I was convinced was incorrect.............

I'll have to go back and review the tranny and the mounts.

Thank so much for the info !! I appreciate it very much.

Fred, I've got a long way to go but it keeps me out of trouble!

Steve (stevep516), sorry for going a bit astray.

Quote:
Gerd, The casting from Belarus appears new or at least it doesn't look like it has any bolt holes drilled yet. Did the ad say ...

Howard, I noticed the same but can't offer a suitable explanation. Published in 2016 the ad said "ZIS" but the cast number of an original ZIS bell housing contains Cyrillic letters.

Quote:
... if someone is reproducing them ...

Sorry, I don't know. But necessity begets ingenuity (see pic #2 below), so we shouldn't rule out that possibility.

Quote:
... or perhaps made a copy for something like adapting a different transmission? ...

The Russian gear box is almost indestructible and a ZIS engine way too expensive to use it for something different.

Does the large hole in the bell serve as an interior inspection port or is that how they adjusted the tone of the bell?

Steve (packardguy53), that would be an arduous task. The shard alone weighs 11.5 tons.

Howard (HH56), they do it.
