Accessing 1951 Packard Manuals

Hi Again,

In trying to make an informed decision (something new for me) on a purchase of a '51 Packard, I've been browsing through the sites' Library and have run into a problem.
As an example, today I tried to download in the suggested manner, the 1951 Flat Rate Manual. The message I got from Adobe was that "the file had be damaged when opening and could not be repaired". I got the same thing with the '41-'53 Flat Rate Manual along with several others. It just seems sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't.
Anybody got any idea what's going wrong? I'm running XP-Pro.

Jim,

Make sure you are using the latest version of Adobe Reader. So of the older versions may not be able to correctly read some of the PDF documents generated in newer versions of Acrobat.

If you are still experiencing a problem, let me know and I will re-upload the documents from my backup disk as I have seen the case where disk corruption happens on the web server and I have to replace a damaged file with a one from my backup set.

Thanks,

I just tried downloading the 41-53 manual that shows on the sort by year 1951 page. Is 8.8 meg and took about 6 seconds on my fast connection. Opens fine. I use MAC OSX 10.5 and Firefox. If you have a slower connection, it might not be all downloading or complete before trying to open but that usually shows up (on MAC anyway) in the download folder as the name of article and says part until complete then turns to .pdf. Don't know what to say otherwise because except for a service counselor or two that is part corrupted, never had a problem.

The most common problem I have seen is people try to view them over the web by simply "left' clicking on the link. This tries to open the document for viewing across the internet, and 7 out of 10 times this will fail do to the size of the PDF files. I always recommend that you right click on a link and choose "Save". This will download the document to your computer for local viewing.

It is also possible that if you are on a dial-up or wireless connection (or other connection that has a higher rate of dropping), then the file may fail, without warning, partially through the download process. So it looks like the file downloaded, but you only got the 3/4s of it. This obviously makes the file corrupt and acrobat will not open it.

Hello again,

I have been doing a right click then target as as suggested and still it's a roll of the dice as to what will happen. The file shows up in my Documents File but when I try to open it, It just won't fly.
Your idea about the vintage of my Adobe might well be the problem. I'll try downloading the new reader and report back what happens.
I'm using a "High Speed DSL connection from Comcast so that shouldn't be the problem.
Thanks for all the help, and I'll be back.

It was the version of Adobe Reader I was using. Thanks BigKev.
