I think he is referring to the anti-rattle leather strips. With them painted, they appear to look like bent over metal tabs.

Only reason I know this is that I saw Brian's original shield when you gave it back to him at the Warren show.

Hmmm..... I notice your car does not have a front frame cross-member like my '54 does. Are all 55/56 frame this way?

Kev, I think all the 51-56 front frame cross members are the same. Maybe you are referring to the splash shield which is not yet installed on my car.

I believe brother Dave Czirr (Owen) has logically deduced what purpose the front carb shield serves. It is to restrict the cool air flow under the intake manifold which would tend to cool the air/fuel mixture on the front carb. Nice detective work Dave. Give that man a Jack Daniels - on me!

Here is a pic on the front of my '54 Clipper. You can see the front frame member (circled) in the picture. This member welding/riveted in place.

Just looking at the pictures in the 48-54 and the 55/56 parts manuals, it appears that the front crossmember pictured in Kev's 54 isn't used in the 55/56. Too cold to go out in the garage and crawl under the 56 to confirm but it would appear that the 51-56 frames are not all the same in this regard.

55-56 frames do not have that brace. Wonder why they eliminated it? I thought you were referring to the main front crossmember. My apologies for not reading more carefully. It also appears that Kev's frame dips down as it goes forward from the upper control arm to the front brace. The 56 (and prob'ly 55) goes straight from the upper control arm.

It does have a taper going forward. It really tapers after the core support mounting holes. Next time I am out in the garage I will try to get side picture, and it will show you the shape of the frame rail better.

Just a few pics. I had the clevis pins plated at a local chrome shop and they did nice work - only $5.00 a piece. I installed the pins and realigned the top so the two dowels line up properly. I built some new shelving in the garage at home to hold the accumulation of parts and pieces and I found the proper hose clamp (230085) for the water pump end of the hose between the pump and the trans oil cooler. I located the heater from my parts car - hadn't looked back in that dark corner for over 10 years I have ordered the exact Packard carpet replacement (which includes the piece that covers the seat motors) and the Caribbean trunk kit and am grateful that someone undertook these projects. Thanks to fellow Packard owners Joel Ray, John Lauter and Ole Book and some others behind the scenes. Several Packard folk have helped me on this project with answers to queries and insight to how to do things. I'm not much at the local Packard level but the Packard community at large is really great!
