I doubt the vendor bothered to place the decals with any great precision. The ones I've generally seen that appeared to be originals were more-or-less opposite the filler.

Perhaps you'r due for a fresh browse of the 55/56 Service Counselors? From Vol 29, #8:

To quote: A few reports have been received of the dip stick breaking loose from the filler cap and slight oil leaks thru the vent hole on the cap.

Production has discontinued the dip stick and are placing a decal on the top of the reservoir with instructions to maintain the fluid level at the top of the filter element.

The filler cap has been redesigned to prevent the slight oil leak through the vent.

One interpretation of this might be that if you have the dipstick, you should not have the decal, and visa versa.

this retaining clip below will work, but it is a PITA to get it into the opening of the pump and into the groove. Lowes has this retaining ring. part number 138793 1 5/8 Hillman, not stainless, but only 1.27 for 2 of them.

i might recommend trying the 1 1/2 size over this 1 5/8, it was that much of a PITA to get in, but i got it in. i had to do some SERIOUS squeezing together.

part is HO-162SS is the one below

Part number for Lowes is 138793

got the pump mounted tonight. i had it mounted with SS fastners, but changed my mind and went with grade 8 as the washer on the SS was bending on the adjustable side before torquing. the grade only barely bent.

i did get the pulley mounted and also fitted the new retaining ring for the bearing, was a PITA to fit. see post above.

can anyone take a pick of the retain cap bolt for the pulley end. i just put a washer, lock washer, and 5/16 bolt, but i'm not sure that is right and i didn't see anything mentioned about it other then cap screw in the manual or parts diagram. i have it on with a SS faster for now, but i many replace with a grade 8 as the washer bent a bit on it again. i'm just wondering if i am not using the right combo of bolt/washer etc. the pulley doesn't actually seem to sit flush with the shaft at the end when you put it on, is that correct? ther is about 1/16 of an inch before it is flat with the flat part of the pulley.

i also found a 7/16 fiber washer at home depot, i have no idea if that is going to work or not, but it fit. if you guys think that wont work let me know.

enjoy.

Hank

Hank, I have photos of an NOS pump that was on EBAY a few years ago. It might help with the position of the decals, if you're interested.

Thanks! that helps alot!

i got pics of the pulley mounted and how i secured it with the bolt. not sure if that is correct though and it is just a SS bolt, may go with a grade 5 or 8 to make sure. i never got a good picture of mine when i took it off and i can't find the baggie that says power steering pump parts.

i know my motor isn't 100% correct, but i'd prefer that pulley not come off when driving! LOL!

i also painted the cap with clear gloss so it wont rust up, works fine if you ask me and you can't really tell its painted.

also in those pics of the NOS pump above....you can see it has the sticker and it looks like the revised cap that Owen was talking about. so wonder if that sticker really wasn't on the ones with the first generation cap. i'm still going to install it on mine, since i bought the sticker and all.

also i just stuck the pump hoses into a hole for now, i'm not sure if that is the correct hole they go in or not. will have to look at that further. i just did it to plug the holes up for now.

enjoy.

Hank

Depending on how much you want to adhere to or deviate from authentic, if you look at factory illustrations you'll see that Packard used a more secure type of hose clamp on the inner (water pump) end of the short hose link to the tranmission cooler. I used the same clamps as you show elsewhere, but I used a modern SS screw-type clamp there - it's not exactly the most convenient and easy place to get at, which was perhaps Packard's thinking in using a better clamp there.

The pulley for the Packard Power steering pump, looks exactly the same as that of a pulley used on GAZ 53A truck engine(ZMZ 53)alternator.
