With a bad back, another way is to call a couple of your Packard buddies over, and chill down a couple of six packs of their favorite brew.

MUCH better idea!

Hey thanks - I'll take you up on that. It won't be until the weather warms a bit though.[

When I tried to pull the head on my 51, it was stuck tight. I sprayed all of the bolts with PB Blaster, and hit each of them with a blast of compressed air from the tank - this drives the solvent in and helps in breaking up the nasty rust that is keep the head stuck. I then bought four really high priced, thick steel putty knives (Purdy, not the cheap ones at Harbor Freight) and ground a long taper on one side of each knife, basically making a very thin chisel. I hooked up the engine hoist to the head and put a light strain on it. Then started on one end, driving a chisel in between each head bolt. I just drove it in about 1/2", then went to the next opening with another chisel and worked my way around the block. After about three turns around the block, it popped loose and I was able to lift it off. Just be careful and don't use a 5 lb sledge! A ball peen hammer is plenty. You don't want to scratch the head or block - I stuck the chisel in the head gasket and that seemed to work ok. I had the beer afterwards!

Hum..Kevin,
No need for a picture, "having the beer afterwords" is pretty much an instinctive process and lends itself to a very high learning curve.....Hope this helps If I can help you with anything else drop me an email.

Regards,
Steve.......
