idler arm removal on a 51

when I had the front end on the Packard rebuilt with a Kanter kit, I was unable to swap out the idler arm that is attached to the passenger side of the frame. The problem is that one of the nuts on the inside of the frame channel has broken loose, and so when you turn the nut, the bolt inside just spins. I'm thinking the only way to fix it is to cut a hole in the opposite side of the box channel, weld a new nut in place, and reweld the piece of channel that was removed for access. Any one else ever run into this problem? Any other solutions?

Cut the head of the bolt off with a cutting disc and then knock the remains inside the frame. Drill the hole clean through the other side, and use a long bolt, heavy washer and nut. I don't recommend what you are suggesting.

that sounds like a much better idea. The chance factor for major problems has really dropped!

Ross, good answer. I was thinking that after the bolt was cut off use a nut insert.

David, I finally remember to look as this and it looks like they did use some kind of a nut insert or at least thats what they use on my 47.

Thanks Wesley. If the 51 is made this way, I can cut the spinning bolt head
off with an angle grinder and if I'm lucky, find another nut insert like that and just weld it onto the frame. Should be easier than drilling thru the frame. Appreciate the sleuthing!

David, Or maybe after you cut the head of the bolt off, just pull the nut insert (if that's what yours use) back in place and spot weld it, to hold it.
Just a though.

Check an experienced NAPA supplier. You may be able to buy a kit to install a new nutsert.

When assembling a little grease and proper torque will prevent fuure problems
