Derelict 5587 Air Conditioning ....JUST FYI

This derelict 5587 is in a salvage yard in Tucson AZ. I managed to get over to photograph its AC unit after spotting it in the yard last year. I hope that the pictures provide some assistance or help to someone. There is an interesting bracket underneath the relocated bypass oil filter.

Thanks for posting. The most complete pictures I remember seeing that showed the ARA temp control valve and where it was positioned.

I think the oil filter bracket was an ARA only item. They put their compressor where Packard did and moved the filter vs other aftermarkets that seemed to have their bracket and compressor on the passenger side and left the filter alone.

Would be interesting to know the advantage of one side vs other. My guess is Packard must have thought the compressor would hinder or have something interfering with the generator access if it was on the same side.

Kevin,

That unit is just like this one,https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7521&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&type=&mode=0&start=0

Mine does not have the valve by the compressor.

I have to find pictures of mine. I took the compressor off, and was going to have a PNT members son weld me another compressor bracket. The son was taking a welding class in high school. Well the son is now teaching, and I just got back the bracket at Salado, without another one made!

THe entire thread i posted a link to above is quite interesting.

The rear trunk mount evaporator. IIRC there is shock absorber access holes that the evap would cover up???? Or maybe i'm thinking of some other make or model of car.

AC pump mounted to drivers side:

Maybe to keep the car balanced out from left to rite. Note the V* sets about 3/4 inch closer to the right side of car anyway. Maybe also to keep belt tension as short as possible and allow for a alot of room for tensionaer pulley on the longer slack side of belt.

Usualyy if one must error on left-to-rite balance for the entire car then weight the drivers side more to keep it toward the crown of the road rather than over in the gutter on the rite side of the car.

Of course no one of those reasons are much evidence of why PMCC opted for the oem position of the pump.

8th pic in first post of this thread lableld IMG_4212_1.jpg .

Battery is removed. Look at the inner fender wall that would ordinarily be hidden by the battery. I see the wireing harness up high. BUT there appears to be somekind of a ROD passing thru 2wo pillow blocks about 3 inches under the wire harness and parallel to wire harness..

My jack leg display screen has rather poor resolution but the valve covers appear to have NO "Packard" script embossed either. Maybe Kevin can remeber the engine color???
