I don't understand the problem?
You can slide an open end or box end wrench over the nut and then turn the top of the shock till it is completely free of the nut. Pull the shock down and remove the hugnut on the bottom.

Sorry, should have been more specific, when you turn the wrench the whole shaft turns, you have to use a 1/4 in wrench on the top boxed end of the shock to hold it still, I am just having trouble with the small amount of room up there. to make it worse they are coil overs so I cannot get a pipe wrench on the shaft to hold it.

Is there enough room between the spring coils for a pair of vise grips -- maybe the needlenose jaw type. How about a ratchet wrench or gearwrench on the top nut or is there not enough room to swing the wrench at all

Can you remove the coil-overs from the bottom?
If so, you can grasp the upper body of the shock to turn it. You shouldn't need to turn the shaft, just turn the upper body as the shaft is fixed to the upper body. I just replaced mine yesterday.
