727 transmission cooler?

Hi Guys,

Well, I'm slowly getting there with the 55 Caribbean, After having the engine re-rebuilt and same with the gearbox, I am now experiencing an annoying problem... I am running the 727 torqueflite behind the 374cui Packard v8, I am running the OEM transmission cooler. After about 40-50 minutes of driving the gearbox began slipping and soon I had no direct drive, so I stopped the car and after about 10 minutes I wad able to drive the car a bit further before the same thing would happen. (Luckily I wasn't too far from home and was able to limp it home) Upon inspecting the oil It smelt and looked burnt. I have got new oil lines so I am guessing that maybe the original cooler isn't working or not well enough? :( I will be looking at possibly bypassing the original cooler and put an bigger aftermarket cooler on instead.

This is also a newly rebuilt gearbox - A bearing went in the torque converter (after 'supposably' being rebuilt less than 2000 miles ago) I was wondering has anyone experienced similar issues with the oil cooler or can provide any other suggestions?

I am sort of regretting installing the 727 conversion kit and not opting for the 700r4 conversion. At the time I had a Dodge Charger with a 727 and absolutely loved that gearbox...

Cheers,
Mat

Install a temperature gauge for the trans to determine IF IT ACTUALY A HEAT CONDITION!!!
Quite frankly and based on the problems u cite with recent rebuild i would be suspicous of a poor quality rebuild and or parts used.

I would put an auxiliary cooler in it as a matter of course. And who knows if that original cooler isn't the cause of a lot of Ultramatic problems itself. If it's restricted the converter will overheat and drive down the line pressure.

However, if the trans rebuild is a clunker. Well, I would take it in for a line pressure test. If the line pressure is low it will slip and overheat.

There is no way you shouldn't be very satisfied with the 727 unless the rebuild is a clunker.
