I just bought a '52 trunk piece that has a yellowing layer in the corner that looks like it was originally a clear coat. Maybe it went past the grill and smaller elements were affected?

Did you read (scroll down) the service letter that was posted earlier in this thread about defense chrome? Further down the page it identified which items were defense chrome and which were traditional copper/nickel/chrome. The trunk handle is cited as being defense chrome.
