35 eight grinding gears

A friend of mine has a 35 eight, and when you change gears they grind. Does it need the clutch readjusted or is it something in the transmission that's past the expiration date?
When you change gears quickly it's not that bad but if you change gears in a normal manor it does it pretty bad. Double clutching does not improve it at all.

1. Dragging clutch? How much pedal free play is there?
2. Amount and type of gear oil in the unit?

Since double-clutching doesn't help I'd suspect a dragging clutch before I'd question the condition of or adjustment of the synchro rings.
