For engines of that era, reaching 100,000 miles with nothing more than a valve job and regular tune-ups was considered a milestone worthy of some celebration.

Well then, since she is only half way there...and she looked good inside when we changed the head gasket about four years and maybe three thousand miles ago, I'll just figure that if I take good care of her and run marvel mystery oil and clean oil and filter and drive carefully...she might outlast me at 71! Thanks, Ernie

Ernie,
My engine was rebuilt at 80,000 miles. Not because there was anything seriously wrong but because I want to repaint the car and wanted to have all the mechanical items as good as they could be before we started the paint job. Here is what was done to the engine and I think basically shows the condition: Crankshaft - was perfect Camshaft - was perfect Exhaust valves replaced with new ones - for unleaded fuel Intake valves - in perfect shape - reused, reground Exhaust valve seats - replaced with hi chrome, premium grade material with hardness range of 35 to 40 (for all types of fuel) Intake valve seats - reground Exhaust valve guides - replaced Intake valve guides - not replaced - in good shape Cylinders - bored .030 over then honed Pistons - new aluminum Rings - premium moly filled Connecting rods - perfect Flathead - milled flat. Was off by .015 Lifters - 4 replaced. The rest reground Oil pump - rebuilt Timing chain - replaced - sprockets reused Water distribution tube and water pump - replaced All new bearings. All new hardware including head studs. Rear main seal was replaced. New freeze plugs. Distributor was tested and checked and adjusted
