Hi,
As I've always used jack stands when working on my car, I now wonder if it's acceptable to use a 2-post stand to lift a Packard equipped with Torsion Level, thus having all four wheels hanging freely?

Absolutely, lift my '56 that way routinely. Just make sure you turn the TL off or disconnect the battery before lifting.
