Denny, It was a very sleepy place back when I lived there. Most of the kids left the island after high school to find work so for a single young man it was very dull. Fishing and hunting were very good when I lived there however so good in that respect. Deer poaching was a serious problem.

Thanks for the update on Highway 61. You probably missed a section in St. Paul, which is a confusing town to drive in, not to mention that the highway probably turned into a "street" somewhere along there.

Guy I avoid St Paul/Minneaoplis or any big city like the plague whenever I can so I bypassed the cities in that stretch and went through Stillwater instead then picked up 61 south of St Paul. No I haven't seen the movie but heard it was pretty good. Thanks for the link.

Great road movie.

An infamous road trip in a nearly new Packard was committed to film a few times over the years. The story of the crime spree of Charles Starkweather and his companion around Nebraska and Wyoming back in '58, part of which was conducted (including the final police chase) in a black '55 Patrician.

The general story was used in at least one movie, "Badlands." which I have not seen but received favorable reviews. I don't think it features a Packard. A made-for-TV movie called "Murder in the Heartland" is supposed to be a more faithful account, and did feature a Packard. It was filmed on location in Lincoln Nebraska. I have looked and looked for it, but never able to find it.

How did you so neatly transfer your post from the other thread onto this one? Just copy and paste, or is there a secret method to do it directly?

I just did a copy and paste. The forum software will allow me to merge a new post to an older thread. But not an older post to a newer thread. (if that makes sense) So I had to do the old copy and paste.

Denny, I recognize South Baymouth and the Chi-Cheeman ferry of course, The Bridal Veil Falls at Kagawong, Is that the Ten Mile Point Lookout or Cup and Saucer Trail?, and is that the lighthouse at Meldrum Bay? As for the nutty Haweaters; I could write a book about those characters!

That scenic view is overlooking Gordon's Lodge at Gore Bay. Yes, that's the Meldrum Bay lighthouse just past the stone quarry. Haweaters!!! I'd forgotten the term. I still have a jar of Hawberry Jelly in the fridge. A couple more photos . . . lined up at the lodge and the "facilities!" Sweet '47!

Denny, The overlook picture was a confusing one for me. When I lived on the island the road to Meldrum Bay was not paved from about Gore Bay west. For those who might be interested the term "Haweater" is a proud reference for anyone born on Manitoulin Island (largest island in a fresh water body of water in the world ). In the early days of settlement in the 1860's the pioneers depended on the Hawthorn tree berry for sustinence hence the term.
