We are installing valve guides in My 36 120 and we would like to know if they were suppose to be installed from the bottom or from the top

Top. If you're having a hard time getting them in, try putting them in dry ice for a bit.

I rebuilt the engine in a '37 115c, and I had a hard time with a few of the valve guides - if you're having a tough time with one or two, you might check to make sure they are all similar diameter.

Not so much getting them in as getting them out. Seem that they were put in from the bottom, maybe with the engine out of the car, some are cracked, some are pretty beat up. As for going in, the machinist, stated the you just adjust them by chuck them up in the drill press and take 1/2 a thousand
off of them.
Just was wondering with all the factory knowledge you gut have if there was an approved method of installation or just get them in

Install from the top, its well-covered in various service and shop documents. As Ken says, packing in dry ice first makes installation easier.

Hello all, I have given up with new valve guides. I now install only K Liner bronze inserts into the existing valve guides. No more sticking valves.

Valve guides are put in from the top with a valve guide driver, merely a punch with 2 diameters. To remove such guides you drive them down close to the lifter and the strike them with a ball peen hammer to break them off. Then drive the rest of it down (and out)

I would think the 12 should be the same. Since they are L blocks.

This is what I made.

Had to use b7 all thread ..the all thread you can use that to put them in also

I made the punch from brass just in case.

The machine shop drive them in. I had to pull them up to get clusters in.

New valve guides on the taper are not as thick as original ones.
