After turning the transmission around several ways and even removing the shifter forks I concluded that the trans has to come out rear first. I wrestled the clutch shaft back into the clutch housing enough to get the driveshaft yoke clear of the X member and turned the jack table down at the back. Once it cleared the x member the trans literally fell out!
Now a new problem presents inself!
The pressure plate and disc won't come out. It seems to be binding on the clutch fork and no amount of prying seems to get it out. Never ending battles it seems. Anyone experience this problem?

I had the same problem with the fork and clutch disc/pressure plate. I'm sure this won't help you, but I didn't tackle that particular problem until I had the engine out of the car, then it was easy.....
