Hey guys,

I've read through your forums and you all seem to be the most knowledgeable folks when it comes to Packards.

A 85 year old customer of mine has a 1938 Packard that's been sitting for a while, and we're trying to gain some knowledge of it's value in order to sell it to finance his golden years.

Any help you could give me would be outstanding, and I appreciate it.

Here is a link to the photos of the Packard.

If that's the motor that belongs to the car, then the car is 1938 Eight (aka "120"), a member of the "junior" series of Packards. The vehicle # from the cowl plate would confirm, if you have it.

Are you joshing up when speaking of value? Value can be a tough thing to ascertain, but financing golden years? I'd venture that it would have a hard time financing a golden weekend, certainly not much more.

Yes I was joshing up. This is only a small part of his estate which we are selling to finance his "golden" years. :)

Glad you appreciate my humor!

That is the motor from the car, and I have the original bill of sale.

Just trying to get a rough idea of what to expect, and the best way to market something like this for my client.

What model would that be of the 16th Series? is it a super 8? what is the wheelbase. I would be happy to find some comparable sales in my database as well as use some of my price guides to get you somewhat of a ballpark..geez that thing needs a miracle

It is not a Super Eight but a 1938 Eight (120) 4 door sedan 1601-1192 127" WB. I would say for pricing a Condition 5 but I am being generous.

Thank you Morgan, that would be much appreciated. I think condition wise this would probably fall under Parts Car?

The motor has been stored out of the weather however, so it might be re-buildable.

well from the june 09 Old cars price guide:

For a 1938 16018 cylinder 127" WB Sedan:
6-1 = WORST to BEST

6-840
5-2520
4-4200
3-9450
2-14700
1-21000

Now OCPG is a little low most of the time when it comes to values, i wasnt able to find any comps at the moment.

The Packard in question noting the condition which is dam poor would come under the header of FP which is for parts car value $1300.00. If you were to consider it a 5 car then value would be about $2500 according to an older publication that I have.

While typing this I read the figures Morgan had posted.
As the old saying goes he beat me to the punch.

Hope the figures posted help you D Smith. One thing for sure the free information given here to you, will put some money in your pocket.

It seems that a professional auctioneer would already have sources at hand to answer the kind of question you asked in here.

That block is not original to that car, unless they changed the bumpers. I think it's a Six car. Probably worth about 1000, to somebody who needed it.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the information very much.

@Packard53 / John...

One thing I've learned my friend is you can't know everything and when you don't know it, don't be afraid to ask. Why ask a book when I can ask the people who write the information for the books?

Sorry if I offended you by asking.
