1950 Standard 8 Broke axle question???

The question is are the axles the same on both sides?

I have the option to buy a whole rear end for about what it cost for just the axle and seals. I thought it would be nice to have for other spare parts. If ever needed.

I am not sure about the technicalities, but if you have space to keep extra spares it is always a good idea. I would definitely get the axle for spares.

Have heard that axle shafts that have been in service for a while "take a set" and if you turn them the opposite way, they soon snap.

In other words always install the shaft on the same side it came out of. Swapping sides can result in a broken axle down the road.

Axels do twist over time. I know that some racing teams would paint a line down the length of the axles so later on they could identify how much they have twisted, and then know when it's time to replace them.

If memory serves,The idea was to rest or unwind the axle on the other side.Only one has any pressure on it at a time anyway.(No posi traction.)And at this distance from new They may break anyway.I will dig up the article. Brian
