well bad news bears everyone........i got around to taking the individual pieces apart on the "new" transmission and well....it wasn't that pretty.

couple of things....the ring gear housing on the new transmission has this lip on it where the band goes. (running change by Packard???) you can see it in the pic vs. the old one that doesn't have it. and as you can tell i wont be using the "new" one for obvious reasons.....so the old one is getting recycled after a good clean up to get the rust off.

also the splines on the shaft have a grooved area in them....see pic.....as compared to the old transmission's pieces....so recycle time again for that part. you can see the metal lip on the "new" one....that is where the excessive rubbing occurred.....then up about 2 inches from there. no pretty.

then we get to the roller bearing on the gear set......cracked and broke, so recycle time again.

you can also see the "0" on the gear box piece that tells you how to line up the top piece and you will also notice it is weighted for balance. and this piece on the "new" trans is kind jacked up too.....so i am thinking about cleaning up the entire old gear box and housing w/ ring gear from the old one and recycling the whole thing if i can get it clean enough. obviously there was a HUGE problem with this "new" unit.....probably why the trans was sitting. LOL!

luckily i have the old parts to fall back on instead of ordering more for more.... $$$$

i will also get with www.ultramaticdynamics.com because i need a new pin as you can see in the pick it broke in the machined area. the above website talks about that in the "improvements" section. i plan to talk to Peter about getting some of the improved parts. i already have new bands and direct clutch from him.

you can also see that the steels and clutches are not too bad, still have original black material on them too. but i have new ones coming with the more modern orange material on them. (i hope they aren't the black ones anyways.) i believe the kit from Max Merrit has the newer material on the clutchs...

also, i had to fix one of my rims. it hat a HUGE pitted area where i fixed it. i was worried it may have been too thin there, so i welded a bead across the affected area and then ground it down until it matched the original form of the wheel. not too bad for an amateur I'd say. i was pleased anyways. ;0)

i also tried to band out that dent on one of my rims, worked a little, but not perfect. i had to heat it up and the hammer it hard to move it as much as i could, but it still isn't perfect, so i am going to use it as the spare tire's rim and take the red one off the spare that was in the trunk when i bought the car and use it for the driver rim. it looks straight.

my friends at discount tire are going to let me use one of the balance machines for free to check the rims before i get them done up in black. if they can be balanced i will be good to go. i hope.....

well enough rambling....enjoy the pics from tonight's adventures. ;0)

later,

Hank

took the rims to discount tire this morning. 3 were really good, 1 was slightly off, but barely (the one with the bead that i bang back straight...go me ;0)

and 1 was completely bent....so that one is going to be the spare.

when i get them back from "wherever" i took them....i'll post pics and you guys decide if they are painted or powdercoated. it'll be fun! ;0)

going to work on the transmission today, cleaning parts, etc. nothing major.

later,

Hank

bad news bears....AGAIN!!! will i EVER have a good trans when this is all said and done. whew! the piston on the old one was broken and now this one is cracked into pieces. i actually thought this won was going to work because i could move the piston back and forth before i took it apart.....not so. anyone have one of these they are willing to part with....i really just need the piston and the lip seal that goes on it. p.s. it is 45 bucks from Max....so anyone??? LOL!

see the photo with the word "clamp" in it....any ideas on how to "make", borrow, rig up, etc...something like that...remember it is brass....i thought about just using a clamp with rubber feat on it to hold it, but that is some serious spring pressure to have to hold.

the other pic of the screw down tool.....well it would just be interesting to know if anyone has ever even seen that thing. luckily my arbor has bolts that you can tight down that will hold the arbor in place while you do other things.

got the drive shaft painted, except the trunnion as i haven't put on the new rubber boot etc....

painted the pan that goes on with the sway bar. had to drill out the spot welds on the sway bar mounts...boooo...oh well. i'll weld that stuff back up and noone will even know it was drilled. hehe. ;0)

found a bunch of bolts that the bag said....transmission, starter, and in that area......LOL! apparently i was alittle vague on that one. looks like i get to go back and look at pics, hopefully i have something to look back on. Oops! ;0) HAH!

cleaned up the trans really good and rust converter primed it. cleaned the bell housing and the tail shaft, inside and out. very clean! i like it!!

also before i get one from ultramatic dynamics.....long shot here....but does anyone have one of those pins that broke....see previous post above for the broken pin.....

thanks everyone and enjoy. will be doing more videos soon after i get the rebuild kit in (Monday) and get all the parts degreased and cleaned up nice.

Hank,

Make sure follow the label on the top of the can. I used the same paint (just the gray version), and most of the pigment settles to the bottom of the can. You really have to stir it well and scrap all along the bottom and sides to get all the high solid pigments mixed in correctly. Even a shaker wouldnt mix it correctly. Failure to do so will affect the color when painted on.

Hang in there Hank, you are a sharp cookie! Sometimes stepping back and taking a break makes all the difference in the world. If this were easy, anyone could do it! I am vicariously living through your parts purchase. Looks like your transmission Will be good as new.

Hank,

I feel for you. I know what it's like to get to a point to put things back together and not remember what bolt went were. I have a small can of "Packard Bits" that I dont remember where they went. Hopefully upon reassemble their purpose will become known to me. I've always said these are the two most important tools when restoring a car, I just need to always remember to use them!

okay i know how the washers go by process of elimination. but i am missing a few and i am COMPLETELY missing all of the valve body bolts, tooth washers, and plain washers. i have all of the old one from the 1st trans, but WTF happened to the one for the new. they are nowhere to be found. the garage gremlin must have taken them. go back to the pics of me taking apart the valve bodies on the towels and there they are.....but no more....i have no idea.

i emptied the cleaning bucket i had the degreaser in to check to see if i missed anything. nothing was there. i checked 3 times. i even checked the big white bucket...nothing.

i put all the bolts in the small bucket next to the white one....and they must have been eaten by the degreaser....

well, looks like the old trans is to the rescue again.....sux though.

and i took so many pics of the old trans i figured i wouldn't need to on the new one...apparently i was wrong.

i did read through the STBs, etc.. on the ultramatic and came across something i didn't do in the video of the small valve body....which i have now fixed....can you guess what i did wrong.......
