ok. So it's studebaker. IIRC Studebaker was always pretty good at landing miltitary contracts. Now why a T'Ultra or any automatic of that vintage would be used for military operations is beyond my comprehension. Most likely it was some boon-doggle stamping for some off-the rail gravey train contract using left over worn out dies.

Wasn't there a contingency plan or something going with AMC that was cancelled on short notice when their engine came on line. Also, seems like a fairly late number so maybe early stampings for proposed cars.

My 'puter resolution is not the best in the world. But the color on the pan appears to be a rather lite OD color. But i didn't think the lite OD came along until the late 60's at the earliest. That paint color mite be the closest clue we have rite now.

That pan would be GREAT to use as a T'Ultra diagnostics test pan (with some minor mods) as outlined in the 55-56 service manual.

A test pan is what I thought it was at first but early pans had a bump out on bottom for port fitting clearance and later ones appeared to use the original pans bolted to the extension--probably to use the dipstick tube to re-fill trans. The extension is the key. I had one welded up from the pictures, used once, but never had an issue fixed. Without it, pan won't do much.
