dad and i have installed the cam....but the endplay is WAY off.

goes from 0 to 45 on the dial...where each nothc is equivalent to .001" the endplay is supposed to be .004-.006 and we are getting .045. wow!

if that is the case....i've got a HUGE problem

how do i adjust....do i move the cam back plug further in the block?

i'm and using the new cam retainter from Jack as well.

engin manual is vague and does not tell you how to correct only how to check.

also we are measuring end play from the front of the motor without the sprocket mounted. is the sprocket supposed to be mounted and you check on the front? or with sprocket mounted and check before the cam plug is put in in the rear?

the manual is extremely vague and our minds are extremely confused. LOL

thanks,

Hank

I haven't assembled a Packard V-8 since KevinAZ & I put his together 5 years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy on this point. IIRC, the Packard V-8 cam retention is like the Pontiac V-8. The end play is determined by the cam retainer plate which bolts to the front of the block and the timing chain upper gear and its retention by the fuel pump eccentric and retaining bolt into the cam nose. The end play has nothing to do with the rear cam plug.

Since you do not have the timing chain installed yet, this is your problem.
