Here is what the ones on my '54 look like. I guess Packard went cheap to same a few pennies.

The knobs on my two 51's unscrewed pretty easily - the shaft being round and simple threaded. Mine 51's are both 200 Deluxe, maybe the senior cars had different shafts?

They went to the new rubber style with serrated rod in 52. Were the knobs still the dark hard rubber in 54 or did they go to colored plastic? If vendors don't have new ones or unless repro knobs become available, what about the possibility of changing the rod back to a threaded type and using an aftermarket replacement knob--Dorman makes several different styles--not quite correct and most are chromed plastic but should be able to be trimmed, scuffed, painted and made workable. Maybe those could even slip onto the serrations. If not, the rods should be fairly easy to make. As I recall rods only have one or two bends and some #8 or #10 threads.

I am half temped to see if I can get someone to machine them out of metal with a set screw!

Am wondering how or where you would put a setscrew with the garnish molding if you had something machined.
