It's my understanding that all 55th Series Clippers had single exhaust system as standard equipment. In May of 1955, Dual Exhaust became available as an option for the Clipper Custom models.

No matter whether it was a single or dual exhaust system, each bank or leg of the system had one muffler.

The Clipper Custom models (5560) also had a resonator (silencer) unit in each of the original tail pipe assemblies, but these were often omitted from aftermarket replacement systems.

The Deluxe and Super (5540) chassis with single exhaust had only a muffler - no resonator (silencer).

Some basic dimensions are provided in the Specifications section of the 1955-56 Packard Service Manual.

Ok,thanks. Then it must have been the resonator(silencer)the man was talking about. When my car was new, people talked about it as shadow because it was so quiet when running

So quiet that I was alomst run over by a '56 Packard that snuck up behind me on its way out of the show field at Hershey, some thirty years ago.

Those "afterburners" make all the difference in the world.
