The problem usually fits into one of the three categories of fuel - spark - timing. When you say it fires, do you mean it attempts to run for a second or several seconds, or that it just backfires on perhaps one cylinder?

Is there a spark visible when you take out a plug and check for one?

Is starter cranking engine at a reasonable speed? Choke working ok?

If what you have is a backfire then it could be a timing problem such as too advanced (- re-time it) or spark plug leads crossed. Also possibly a fuel issue could cause backfiring. Is fuel stale?

To check for a fuel problem you could get an assistant to squirt an ether-based spray briefly down the carby throat(with air cleaner removed)while cranking the engine. One brand of ether spray is Nulon

It doesn't need much spray. Ensure the engine is cranking at the time of spraying because a build-up of ether could provide a very large bang and a big surprise for the assistant! (Of course, keep petrol etc well away at the time).

If engine runs while the ether is being administered then it's a fuel problem (starvation is likely) so you would need to check the pump, carby etc.
