The hood ornament and the side vents on the hood and the fender make me say 1928-1929 cadillac, but the front suicide doors tell me different.

LaSalle of the same vintage? Look at the hub caps, no Cadillac crest, but it does look like the LaSalle script.

Hi

His car was a 1931-33 Auburn sedan. The molding sweeping up onto the hood is the telltale. It was an Auburn styling feature through 1934. The hood ornament probably is a Cadillac or LaSalle item, folks dressed up their cars with whatever appealed to them then.

For the eight cylinder models, if it was a 1931, it would be a Model 8-98 or 8-98A Custom; 1932: a 8-100 or 8-100A Custom; 1933: 8-101 Standard, 8-101A Custom, 8-105 Salon Dual Ratio.

Twelves were: 1932: 12-160 Standard, 120-160A Custom; 1933: 12-161 Standard, 12-161A Custom Dual Ratio, 12-165 Salon Dual Ratio. This styling was held over for the 1934 1250 Salon Dual Ratio.

Do you have any details on it? Here's an improved image to see the details better.

Steve

Steve might be right. Here is a 31 Auburn. Same suicide doors front and rear. Same contrasting paint color around the windows. His eyes are sharper than mine in seeing the contrasting paint on the hood in the old pic.

Thanks! My mom emailed me that pic and asked me to identify it. My grandpa started working in the coal mines in Uniontown PA when he was 16, and bought and sold cars on the side. My mom said when she was a kid, and they would start walking to a parking lot, they often didn't know what car they should be walking to! Tomorrow (halloween) would be my grandpa's birthday.
I'll relay your info about the auburn to my mom, and ask her if she has any stories.

Hi Tobs

Your grandfather had good taste in cars as a young buck! Auburns were considered fast cars and more stylish with their Al Leamy styling and boat-tailed speedster models.

The Twelves really were early muscle cars, high horsepower engines in relatively light chassis. Best part for someone young with a few bucks to spend, once they were orphans, they were dirt cheap as used cars.

I hope your mother can recall some details about his Auburn. Who knows, maybe this was a Twelve he bought for little scratch, had a ball with.

Packards or not, we love to see period photos of cars people owned then, especially when its something unique. See what else is in that old photos box.

Steve, I doubt it was a 12. While the body looks the same from the firewall back, the front clip on a 12 looks a lot longer.
