How is the cigarette lighter receptacle removed from the dash for replacement? There is limited room to grab it from behind the dash and I don't want to scratch paint on the front of the dash. I do not find this covered in the Service Manual. Thanks.

There is a sleeve that unscrews from the socket assy. You disconnect the wire(s), and while holding the front bezel and socket assy you can reach behind and unscrew the sleeve. The lighter assy removes from the front. The decorative bezel is usually a separate piece so once the the assy is loose and out of dash the socket will slide out of the bezel. You may have to use your finger in the socket and thumb on the bezel to pinch and maintain the pressure to keep the assy from rotating as you remove the sleeve.

This photo is not a 54 dash assy so no bezel but they all remove the same way. Some will have the ground wire in addition to the power wire as this one does and others just rely on the sleeve to contact the dash metal for ground.
