I have an ultramatic transmission leak from the vent that I suspect is the result of the speedometer gear being installed backward. Is this something that can be fixed with the transmission in the car?

From the way the article in SC Vol 27 #11 reads I would say yes. It will mean holding the trans and engine up with a jack while you remove the rear crossmember and tail shaft to access the parking gear and drive gear. In lieu of using a jack to hold the engine and trans you could also make a version of the holding bar as described in SC Vol 24 #6 with the longer screws as mentioned in SC Vol 25 #10.
