Re: Rear main oil seal on 288 very tight

There is really no way to get any other kind of seal over the end of the crank because there is a flange in the way. Maybe some kind of split seal would work after machining the block and cap for it but by the time you've done all that, you might as well have just used the rope seal and this type of seal is more effective than a modern one too!

I do have a 1949 288 engine. It is not perfect . It runs some rough, I suspect a valve job . I can crate it up for materials costs and $100.00 for my time.-$200.00 for the engine . You pay freight. Weighs about 700 lbs. I live near Sesttle,Wa.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but, being new to Packard's, I'm wondering why not use a modern style seal, rather than a rope seal?

I installed the passenger side mirror, and while it is not much good while driving, I think it will help me while backing up into the one garage that is tricky to get into with three doorways I back through....I will not intall a passenger side mirror on the Caribbean. I think the Pass side Mirror Was not often installed originally.
One minor thing I would like to improve....I get some Wind noise from the A pillars, or the vent windows. I can't be sure of the source, but will try driving tomorrow with clear tape over this joint between the roll down window and vent wing to see if that makes any difference.

My nice working hypothesis is gone. It's all Mal's fault!

...actually looks like a very close match...

I feared this would apply to a whole range of contemporary vehicles, a 1930s Hudson / Essex Coach for example.

They look pretty good but I can imagine all the time into them to get that look. You have more patience than I ever had.
