Re: 1940 Packard grille and grille surround

No 115 in 1940 but as far as I recall, the 110, 120, 160 and 180 used the same grille housing. The grille frame itself, though, is quite different between the junior and senior models but the parts book should help confirm.

It looks very nice! The swirls are what known as Moiré Pattern and are common when photographing things with lines when using a digital camera, particularly when the photo gets reduced as it does when uploaded.

Maybe he's in Moscow, Idaho as his profile says Pacific Time.

As Wat said, use a battery, not a charger as chargers whether old style or more recent typically put out pulsating DC rather than pure DC.

It's a pelican or cormorant, NOT a swan! Never was called a swan.

Re: 1951-1954 abd 1955-1956 Door Mirrors

Mike, the one that another dealer sent is the 1951-1954 style but with the 1955-1956 bracket but I understand that the angled bit behind the mirror is also different, allowing for the mounting location and getting the angle needed to actually use the mirror. Here is the mirror side of the 1955-1956 type followed by the type for 1951-1954.

That said, the forward-most point of the mirror head sometimes has a hole where the mirror attaches and sometimes it does not. I have never seen the type with the hole for 1955-1956 but I have seen it both ways for 1951-1954 so I expect it’s a detail that was brought on by having more than one supplier making them, each with its own method of attaching the mirror.

Re: Solid State Voltage Regulator
Home away from home
Home away from home

Packard Don
After considerable time, I am working on this again with the main delay in having moved from Silicon Valley to coastal Santa Cruz where getting to the laser cutting shop that I use was much farther.

That said, I finally managed to go there last week to have a couple of the Delco-Remy regulator bases cut out for the mounting of the regulator and to have the contact arms cut. This is only a prototype and totally untested which brings up the question of how to do it. The only Packard I have with the Delco-Remy mounting holes is my 1954 Patrician which, of course, is positive ground. So, if I were to temporarily reverse the battery polarity for testing, would the solid state regulator be damaged by polarizing the generator?

Shown here, the main regulator is just sitting loosely in place and obviously the same with the daughter board and connectors. Ultimately if more are made, I will make all the steel connectors the same so as to cut the cost because making three different ones was expensive!

I've been going back and forth with Fred at Max Merritt about the 1956 mirror shown in my initial post which I've linked again below. With the bracket mounted, the mirror would stand away from the door but he insists that it is the proper mirror! Shouldn't the boss on the bottom be shorter by at least 1/4"? What am I missing here?

I agree with West’s assessment! The pontoon fenders and no running boards are what really set it off from any others. Otherwise why not just get one not already modified?

Olson’s Gaskets has the pattern and can make them in 1/8” thick cork which in my experience seals far better than the thin type available over the counter. The housing is just stamped steel and likely not flat and the cork can take up the irregularities while the thin gaskets cannot.
