Re: 1949 Green Packard

Turbopackman has a much greater sense of adventure than I do. I wouldn't recommend using a '49 Packard as a primary form of transportation. I guess it could depend on where, how far, how fast, how often... etc. The bathtub Packards are wonderful and fun to drive, but I won't drive mine in snow (salt damage), or on 90+ degree days (overheating... me, not the car).

The old in-block valve spring compression tools do show up on eBay fairly frequently. I got a really nice one for under $20. There's a ZIM tool on eBay now with an opening bid of $1. Item no. 380054316794.

The first mention of multi-viscosity oils is in the '56 owners manual. There they are listed as 'Acceptable'. No mention of detergent oils at all. Still, I use a detergent oil in my 1950 356 because of the hydraulic lifters (yes... I dropped the pan, cleaned the pan, pickup and valve lifter area and replaced the missing oil cannister/filter before using a detergent oil).

IMHO, there is no such thing as an undesirable Packard. Packard built 14,949 Clipper 6's in 1947. This compares with 23,855 Clipper 8's and 12,282 Clipper Super/Custom Super 8's. So there were fewer 6's built than 8's.

It's a LeBaron. Model 1420. The door and rear quarter windows are unmistakable.

I agree with HH56. Based on your description of the problem, I'd start with checking the carburetor switch. Just jumper the two screws to see if it turns over.

John, Packard Blue is a very, very dark blue almost black. Sort of the color of the US Navy dress blue uniform. I believe it was offered as a standard Packard color from as early as 1910. You can see a sample in the paint chip section of this website for the 1941 Packards.

Mal,
I checked in my Motors manual, the Shop manual, and the pictures of my '41 180 wheels before disassembly and I think JW may have picked up on something I didn't see when admiring your re-assembly. The short (primary) lining goes towards the front of the vehicle.

I used Kepich for my '50 Custom Sedan. This was last October. I took the exhaust system they sent me to a local muffler shop to have it installed. It fit perfectly. I'm a satisfied customer. I'll probably be using Kepich again when I replace the exhaust on my '41.
