Re: Paint Removal

This may be a little off topic and it may not work on your problem. but I would like to endorse a great cleaner I've discovered. . . Krud Kutter. It works very well on stains, grease, grime, oil, tar and old wax. I recently used it on my enclosed trailer and it removed tons of old sins. I then applied a coat of Rejex, a wonderfully slick polish used primarily on airplanes. It makes bug removal a snap . . . just hose 'em off! My trailer looks like new again.

We drove our '52 Mayfair on a VMCCA tour last summer that took us 1300 miles round trip. Traveling from NW Ohio, our destination was Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario, Canada. (The miles we traveled on the gigantic ferry that we shared with several semi trucks, didn't even count!) The funny thing that happened was shortly after we started driving on the island, our GPS stopped working . . . it just seemed to freeze. My buddy turned his on and it was frozen to a fixed location too. We looked at each other and agreed that we must have reached "the end on the earth!" Actually, the following day the GPS's were working again. Maybe it was sun spots or something!

Many of the old codes are not transferable to modern codes so you have to use a system similar to what Owen_Dyneto suggests. It can be very time consuming and not a perfect science. I got lucky with matching the '41 Grove Green Metallic as an old paint guy took the time and found a perfect match . . . an AMC color from 1971. Imagine, my Clipper is now painted Gremlin Green!!!! This is very hard for me to admit in a public forum!

Apparently there was a two-tone option for the '48-'49 models as per the directory.

Re: New 6V generator to alternator option

One reason for considering switching to a 6V alternator is driving through parades. I've had problems in the past running at idle for an hour and a half. I don't think the generator charges very well at idle, or even at slow speed touring, but the alternator would keep up. I'm basically a purest too, but I'll look at performance upgrades when they make sense to me. I also installed turn signals, run on correct size radials and buckle-up!

I did a little investigation and they DO make a 6V model. You can get one through Jegs.com (800-345-4545) model pwm-82106, or Summitracing.com (800-230-3030) model 713-82106 for $380. It is described as a black, 75 amp Ford swing mount model for 6V positive ground. I don't know if it will mount like the old generator and they make no claim that it will fit a Packard. Wiring wise, they say its a "one wire" installation.

Here's what I'm looking at:
http://www.jegs.com/p/Powermaster/757123/10002/-1

And here is a review from a customer (found at J.C. Whitney site:
"I ordered this item thinking that since my 1951 chevrolet was a 6 volt and this cleary says for a 1951 in the add, that this would work on it. When I recieved this item the instructions in the box told me that this was for a 12 volt system, or a 6 volt that has been converted. Now what am I to do. Unless you have a 12 volt system I do not recommend this item."

Maybe I'll make some calls . . .

Dan, I think that is a 12 volt alternator. I went to several sites including Powermaster who builds it, and they all appear to be 12V. Jegs, Performance Parts, and Pacer Performance all carry it as a 12V. Please prove me wrong, as it would be a great option!

With all that being said, why isn't the "original" Clipper from 1941 considered a classic or a milestone vehicle? I know I'm a biased '41 Clipper owner, but could never understand why it was omitted. It's style and (at least the optional) appointments broke from tradition leading Packard in a new direction, certainly setting a milestone . . .
