Have you all seen the Ebay seller that purportedly sells a screw for 9.99? Then of course you are baited into buying other used parts from him. As I recall, the car pictured in the add is an early 50's Clipper.

Yes, early on I was suspicious of a vacuum leak and we blocked off the only two vacuum-driven units, the Electromatic and the windshield wipers. The antenna is a rotary roof unit. We even eliminated the vacuum source to the booster pump.

But thanks for thinking about it and posting. If it were my car, I'd be barreling down the New Jersey Turnpike at the speed limit+ right about now.

Van, there is something in the back of my mind about this Dan Topping thing, but I can't quite recall it. Perhaps an article somewhere, a picture, someone I met? Hopefully it will surface sometime soon and I'll try to find this thread again and post it. In the meantime, keep searching.

The light arrangement is interesting. I would think the buttons would be all same when nothing pushed in but then would go bright instead of out or dim when it is in use. I can't remember how Packard did theirs now, so will have to look.

Any chance the extra switch is for backup lights or is the starter interlock so it would only start in neutral? Except for Packard & Edsel, just about everyone else with pushbuttons were mechanical if memory serves--so the Russians were in good company--and if history is a judge, much better reliability. Rolls Royce had (has) an electric shift motor operated by switches and the regular lever but don't know how well that worked.

To Owen:

Thanks again for your generous time and effort to solve the mystery of this missing classic.

I have tried in the past to obtain a copy of issue #41 - to no avail. The Packard people who provide back issues have no copies for sale.

Thanks again, still looking for the elusive 1939 Rollson.

I think the sticking valve idea is most likely. However, another slim possibility is a vacuum leak. I had one in my shop that had a leak in the vacuum antenna. Disconnect it from the wiper motor T and plug it. A long shot I know but . . .
Let us know what you find.

I wonder what is the difference between SL-134 and SL-141. I mean what make SL141 Heavy duty?

Edit: No matter, Napa doesn't carry a SL-141.
