The car reminds me of the story about the emperor that wasn't wearing any clothes.

For the rear brakes, if you look at the my project blog, you will see a series of step by step photos of me removing the rear brakes and backing plates on my '54 Clipper . Virtually the same as the '55.

Start here:https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=19369#forumpost19369

Also all the Service Manuals and Parts Manuals for the Post-War Packard and most of the Pre-War Packards are available here on the website.

Amen & well said. If I go to a show, it's always display only category.

As to the top picture "car show loser", that's a hoot & one way to keep everyone dry. I only hope there are no tall hills to climb. Otherwise the top heavy cab is likely to land the poor water buffalo in the drivers lap.. NTHSA would have a field day--at least an acre of trees writing that up.

Hi

West and JW, well said! Packard owners who drive and share their cars truly have THE TROPHY! No cheapo trophy needed.

Those poor souls who need validation by a show car trophy, let them have it, it's probably the only recognition they receive in their miserable lives.

Of the Best of Show awarded to replicar rods; while it is dismaying, best to keep in mind my paraphrase of H.L. Mencken:

"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence or taste of the American public!"

Regardless if it's genuine, if it's showy, pretty and especially really "cool", it'll get the first prize!

Steve

Hey Ken,

Was this show at the top of the hill in Oregon City? If it is, its kind of a rag tag bunch, and not surprised if a '74 caprice in primer were to be the grand champion.

I saw your competition......you were robbed.

I believe the prior recent Horch winner at Pebble was a 1938 model 853 roadster bodied by Erdmann & Rossi and owned by Judge Cassini of New Jersey.

Kurf?rstendamm, of course. I should have picked up on that, I've been there.

My local North Jersey unaffiliated independent club, the Restored Rusty Relics, has run a show for about 30 years, typically drawing 300-500 cars which must be 25 years old or older (though an occasional replica sneaks in). Proceeds to local charities, and members not only are not eligible for awards, they pay the same entry fee as anyone else. Though some few members occasionally take exceptionto these rules, I feel they are entirely appropriate and avoid the issue of political preference in awards.

Hi Mal, I too have had some recent tire experience. The spare on my 115C was a 25+ year old thing. It had thread, but was looking a bit weathered. I decided to replace it since I have been driving the car to shows in a 50-75 mile radius of home and did not trust the old tire. I ordered another Diamond Back wide whitewall tubeless radial to match those on the car. The tires are new Hankooks with the whitewall vulcanized to a smoothed outside sidewall. They have been most satisfactory in driving and appearance. I took the new tire and the old spare tire and wheel to a speciality shop here to have the new tubeless tire mounted and balanced. When I got it home I discovered that they had mounted the tire with a tube, and not even a radial tire tube. I took it back to the shop and they mounted the tire properly, without a tube, and rebalanced it. I gave the the old tire and the new tube to the grandsons. I am somewhat surprised and pleased that those old 1937 wheels can be mounted with tubeless tires and hold the air pressure better than my 2008 Mini Cooper. I hope your tire experience is better.

Wow, a '54 Packard in that condition, excluding a convertible, would be around $1200.00 US! And that's if it's in very complete condition and the engine at least started.
