my suggestion to remove the pitman arm from the drag link was to trick him into diagnosing the condition of the ball stud at the end of the pitman arm. These often have a groove worn into them. I can tell from the photo the ball stud is original by the way it is peened on. Good experience to see that it is greased otherwise...

But yes, simply pulling the pitman arm off the cross shaft can be done without detaching from the drag link.

Remove cotter pin.
Unscrew end of drag link (I use the end of my short crowbar)
Release from pitman arm.

When your cross shaft is out, report on the feel of the roller on the end. It is NOT easily repairable, unlike the more fortunate 39-later Packards....

Unbolt Pitman arm from cross shaft
release Pitman arm from drag link
Use Pitman arm puller to remove Pittman arm from cross shaft.
open steering box cover pull cross shaft out.
replace seal.
reverse.

I can mail you a seal on monday...

basic normal average hardware store sponge rubber. Though I would personally spring for something with a little more lifespan, maybe with Silicone in it. I've dealt with many a header with melted, decomposing 80 year old sponge rubber....
