Re: Exhaust routing 50 sedan

Home away from home

Dave, I just went into the garage and took a look at the tailpipe on my '47 Custom Clipper. The pipe goes over the 5th shock and fits between the gas tank and rear spring and shackle, just barely. I measured it and it is 2" O.D. Did not check to see if the tailpipe fit in or over the muffler outlet. I hope this helps.

I have used Teflon tape as a mold release. In my case I wrapped the tape around bolt threads (one wrap), filled damaged threads in bolt hole with JB Weld, screwed in the wrapped bolt, and after the weld had set unscrewed the bolt. It works, but not for anything that has a lot of stress. Might work for the jet plug threaded holes in the carburetor bowl.

Re: Valve Stems Leaking - Why a tube in a tubeless tire?

JWL
Wasn't Packard the first U.S. auto manufacturer to offer tubeless tires on its 1954 models? If so the wheels were designed for tubeless tires. The tubes were probably installed because of a bad seal around the bead area like Kevin experienced. I would recommend cleaning the bead area of the wheel in question and remounting the tire without a tube and see what happens. Radial tires require special tubes.

To make room in the garage for the '47 Custom Clipper I sold a gorgeous orange 1973 Datsun 240Z. This car had less than 49k original miles. It was an unmolested, well preserved, and unrestored car. It even had the original Hitachi mono AM-FM radio. It looked like a 20k mile car. It went to a good home.

Re: Battery Cut-off switches

JWL
Obviously, interrupting the ground side (regardless of polarity) is the best and safest choice. I believe a well thought out and executed cut-off switch on the hot side of the battery is acceptable, but not the best way to do it. I will rethink my 115C cut-off switch solution. clipper47, I would be interested in your solution. Thanks, I'll let you know what I end up doing.

Re: Packard Shows & Events

I think the suggestion for a Packard Shows and Events is a good one. This is a common feature on many sites, and could serve us well too. Would there be a way to incorporate photos taken at these events to this menu item? This would give us one place to go to learn about shows and events and to look at what was exhibited at them. Again, as pointed-out earlier, this would entail more work for Kevin. We need to treat this guy nicely, after all look at all he has done for us and the site. Thanks Kev!

I too was thinking about a battery cut-off switch for my '37 115C and '47 Clipper. The Clipper is easy enough because the battery is in the engine compartment. Switching the ground side of the battery is relatively simple. The 115C has its battery under the seat on the driver's side. I have seen, on these under seat battery cars, where a cut-off switch has been mounted to the frame across from the starter and another short battery cable connected from the switch to the starter. I am a bit uneasy having the switch on the negative "hot" cable, but if installed in a workmanlike manner and securely fastened should not be a problem. The advantage to this set-up is having the switch in the engine compartment for easy access. Does anyone see a problem with doing the job this way? Installing a cut-off switch near the under seat battery to switch the positive ground cable involves more inconvenience and complexity than the one in the engine compartment.

West and Dave, thanks for the your recommendations. I have forwarded your message to my friend. He lives in Pt. Townsend, Washington, and will be in Dayton performing with his folk music band, Balkan Cabaret. He is an airplane nut, and has bought an airplane and is getting his pilot's license. He also volunteers when the Collings Foundation planes tour in his area. He has become quite a popular volunteer for them and they would like for him to accompany them on other stops. All of the at a youthful age of almost 70. I suggested he spend his time at the AF museum and not bother with the Packard museum.

West, thanks for the information. This seems to be a little known facility. I learned about it from a friend who is going to be in the Dayton area in September and was looking at what was available to see and visit. He knows I am a Packard affectianato and forwarded the URL to me. I would visit the museum if I were in Dayton for nothing more than to satisfy my curiosity. It says in the website that this is the home of the PAC, but there is no reference to the museum in their website. Curious . . . or maybe the whole thing is just to confusing to me. Thanks again.
